Making Diversity Happen: Putting Talk Into Action
Making Diversity Happen: Putting Talk into Action
Diverse teams are proven to be more creative, and build more enduring solutions. But you don't get results automatically. It takes trust and intentional management. Teams and companies who invest in making diversity a priority will win.

Join Startup Institute and moderator Dom Brassey, VP of TechUP, for an engaging conversation on how Chicago tech is building a more diverse and inclusive workforce. The conversation will focus on real actions and experiences—as we explore how companies, organizations, entrepreneurs, and individuals encounter success and challenge, and what to do next.

Panel
Tom Alexander - COO 1871
Dominic Liddell - Founder, Tech While Black (and Startup Institute Alum)
Jazmin Schroeder - Director of Engineering, Sittercity
Kelley Williams - CEO & Co-Founder, Paige & Paxton
Trisha Degg - Director Talent, Illinois Technology Association

Future of Gaming and VR/AR at FTW Chicago: The Arcade Reimagined
Part I - Arthur J Mortega

The future of Chicago Gaming

The term eSports has become a well-known buzz word as of late. Stories of large scale
tournaments where gamers are competing for multi-million dollar prizes, universities starting varsity level video game teams, and tech companies spending over $1 billion to claim a stake in this exploding industry.

Why is eSports a thing? When did eSports get its start? What is eSports currently doing? Why is Chicago important to the future of eSports?

Video games are no longer a child’s plaything, but instead a cultural phenomenon that resonates with the global community. Together we’ll learn how eSports is truly the future of gaming.

Part II - Patrick O'Shaughnessey

2016 was a pivotal year that put Virtual Reality (VR) on the map, with consumer launches of major VR platforms like Vive and Oculus Rift, as well as lower-cost headsets like Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR you can use to experience VR with your smartphone.
However, in the coming years Augmented Reality (AR) holds the promise to overtake VR in its reach, usage, and revenue. The AR industry has seen billions in investment in recent years by major players.

In this talk, we’ll compare VR to AR, and outline some of the sweet spot use cases for each.
We’ll also show a demo of Microsoft Hololens, a magical and revolutionary new device that has set the bar for what a true AR experience needs to look like.
Come and find out why AR represents the next wave of computing, giving us new powers to visualize and manipulate data, play games, and collaborate, all within the context of the real world we inhabit every day.

Part II - Mark Ladd

Alternate Reality Gaming (ARG) gaming embraces the new media of our 'cyberfuture' present using not only mobile apps, but also websites, and other digital channels to provide the transmedia backdrop for intricate narratives. A central theme of this new social gaming typology is moving beyond the traditional paradigm in which a user is fixed in front of a console or display to the interactive 'mobile' game as it becomes an augmented version of the real world that delivering a unique player experience using mobile device interfaces that "mark" reality with virtual overlays using augmented reality devices.

Mark’s presentation focuses on leveraging augmented reality with interactive multiplayer gaming via the cloud to enable large groups of users to participate in innovative immersive mobile gameplay experiences anywhere. This discussion focuses on the 'next generation' of interactive mobile gaming experiences which overlays digital and augmented reality constructs on physical immersive games that actually puts players into the game. Explores utilizing new game mechanics as motivations for interactive physical play that is now digitally connected through the cloud and through sensor-based hardware.
